Auckland

As New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland is home to a diverse range of people, places and experiences. Surrounded by two beautiful natural harbours and tropical rainforests, there are plenty of active outdoor experiences to be enjoyed around the region. Downtown Auckland offers a wide variety of world-class dining experiences, locally owned boutiques and luxury brands. Some of New Zealand’s best attractions are also a major drawcard for visitors, including Auckland Museum (home to the largest collection of Maori and Pacific treasures in the world), Kelly Tarlton’s Sealife Aquarium and the Auckland Art Gallery (New Zealand’s pre-eminent public gallery).

Active adventures

Enjoy a sunset kayak to Rangitoto Island

- Auckland’s youngest volcano (now dormant) and the natural icon of the city skyline. The views from the summit are simply breath-taking and make the short hike well worth the climb.

Cruise the waterfront to Mission Bay

- follow a safe, separated pathway along the waterfront on foot or an e-bike, and enjoy an ice-cream or fish and chips on the beach. New Zealand’s most popular bicycle ride.

Snorkelling at Goat Island

- swim with thousands of fish in pristine waters in this spectacular marine reserve located just 45 mins north of the city.

Nature experiences

Hike or bike the Hunua Ranges

– home to magnificent native Kauri trees and the endangered Kokako (NZ native bird), hiking in this sub-tropical rainforest is a truly magical experience. Mountain biking is also a popular activity here.

Waiheke Island

– Waiheke is a haven of beautiful vineyards, olive groves and beaches, all just a 40-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland. The white sandy beaches at Oneroa, Palm Beach and Onetangi slope gently down into the Hauraki Gulf and are perfect for swimming, kayaking, or having a picnic.

Discover the ‘wild west’

– black sand beaches and pounding surf make for an invigorating day out on Auckland’s wild west coast. The world famous Muriwai Gannet Colony is always worth a visit, with breeding pairs arriving in August for nesting. Surf lessons are also available.

Urban adventures

City walking tours

– a great way to orientate yourself in Auckland and discover hidden laneways, boutiques, street art, cafes, bars and venues with a local guide.

Museums and galleries

– Auckland Art Gallery, the NZ Maritime Museum and Auckland Museum are all well worth a visit. Guided experiences help bring these incredible cultural institutions to life.

Devonport

– enjoy a short cruise across the harbour to the charming Victorian seaside village of Devonport, also home to the Royal NZ Navy. Visit the Torpedo Bay Navy Museum, an interesting museum acknowledging our naval history and the men and women who have served.
